Barrington Levy - Here I Come

After establishing a solo career in his teens with a run of hit singles for producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Barrington Levy evolved during the early`80s into one of the most popular singers of the pre-digital dancehall era. His distinctive falsetto vocals and patois-inflected phrasing made him one of the most in-demand vocalists and Joe Gibbs was among the first to enlist the youngster's prodigious talents, cutting a spate of riddims for the Treasure Isle and Studio One labels. 'Here I Come' was originally released in JA. ('85) and in the UK via Greensleeves ('87) backed by the mighty Roots Radics Band & includes popular dancehall tunes 'Under Me Sensi' 'Live Good' & 'Here I Come'

Evil Edna's Horror Toilet - Too Much Gristle In The Blancmange (Better Days) 1986.

Another gem from Better Days, Evil Edna's Horror Toilet was a legendary collaboration with members of the Magic Mushroom Band, Ozric Tentacles, Ullulators and Webcore, who released this one cassette album of experimental festie psych-punk. It's a canny essential reflection of the 80s uk underground/D-I-Y scene and hints at the later stuff released by the Thunderdogs, who shared many of the same members. enjoy

V/A - Headz 2B ( Mo Wax ) 1996

The HEADZ compilaions really helped put Mo' Wax on the map & 2B, subtitled 'breaking down barriers and messing up heads' is just as essential as that first seminal collection, with focus on the then emerging jungle/drum'n'bass scene and of course a heathly dose of mid 90s avant garde Hip-Hop. Mo' Wax should be considered a genre in itself. enjoy .

Anorakovak - User Friendly EP (2000) VAC

Anorakovak rip apart post experimental triphop on this excellent ep, wrapping it around the really distinctive voice of Dood Cox, the heavyweight production & atmospheric compositions of Stu Barker(war against sleep) which remind me of all the best bits of the late 90s Bristol sound, Massive Attack, Earthling, Laika & Nicolettes' Let No One Live Rent Free In Your Head'.

ZUVUYA - Contact and Switch the Other

Zuvuya grew out of Webcore, an altogether imaginative and technically pioneering 80s UK festi band, pushing back the barriers, marrying tribal rhythms and pagan philosophy with underground culture. As Webcore Paul, Phil and Mick infused free festivals, squat gigs & early Club Dog with their psychedelic pagan punk & then drifted away rather quietly as 1988 drew to a close... Eventually the trio teamed up again, combining Paul's ambience with Phil's rhythms, and Mick's strange, poetic vocals. Initially doing it live on the Global Sweatbox Tour and then regularly at Megadog, Whirlygig and Megatripolis.
Keen experimentation with hallucinogens, Zuvuya inevitably came into contact with the now infamous Terence McKenna, who had been experimenting with the properties and effects of the most powerful of all psychedelics, D.M.T. The result was the "Dream Matrix Telemetry" & "Shamania"albums plus a session for John Peel, the compilation tracks (all of them included here except 'moose jaw'- as i don't have a copy) as with their seminal "Grabbing Nandi By The Horn" debut hardly feature Mckenna and are stronger for it in my opinion. Altogether this is a high intensity mind-bomb, and a truly psychedelic experience born out of the free festival scene. enjoy

Codin Caron - LAKE, LAK, LA

Debut album from Bath based Codin Caron was released on Nature House in 2008 & was partly recorded & mixed at the Bristol vaulted basement space of Toy Box Studios. Codin Caron should be sitting comfortably up there with Volcano the Bear, Scatter, Panda Bear, Juana Molina,Tunng, the liesure society, Fence Collective & Charalambides with their unique sound that's drenched in grainy textures and off-kilter rhythms with the sensibilities of anti-folk and the more experimental elements of freak folk. Ed and Sam create a sonic canvas for the emotive & idiosyncratic songwriting provided by james, infused with a D-I-Y ethic and a passion for the surreal. Weirdly they bring to mind the Swell Maps, maybe because Codin Caron employ a similar approach to making music on this sublime album. enjoy
