Alternative TV - Apollo (Overground) 1999

'Apollo' was Alternative TV's first album of all-new material since 'My Life As A Child Star'(1994). The various styles on the album reflect Mark Perry's diverse influences & throws a lot of different ideas into this melting pot. Apart from his customary acerbic vocals, Mark also plays guitar, keyboards and most of the percussion. He is assisted by former Long Decline members Luci Bocchino (guitar) and Rob Ugly (bass) with guest appearances from long time ATV fan Roddy Frame (ex-Aztec Camera) and Nag (Door And The Window/The Reflections). Yet again, Alternative TV prove that they are still the most interesting and relevant group to emerge from the original UK punk scene.

Spearhead - Stay Human

If radical, poetic activism had a soundtrack, Michael Franti would be all over the sleeve notes. He and his band Spearhead are taking on the world, one cause at a time producing music that is based on the premise of 'getting the message to the people'. Musically Franti is near impossible to pigeon-hole, such is the wide variation of styles which Spearhead are capable of. When all the elements of this complex hybrid(Hiphop, reggae, jazz, old school soul and punk) are properly aligned, the results are body-shaking tunes, ugly realities and raw, earthy, feel-good music combined so skilfully that it makes you wonder why intelligent music such as this has had to take a back seat.

The Suntanama - The Suntanama

Paradoxical New York-based Southern rock revivalists the Suntanama feature vocalist Darren Zoltowski, guitarists Keith Connolly and John Allen, bassist Dave Shuford, and drummer Robert Gregory. Shuford and Connolly are also part of the acclaimed free folk outfit the No-Neck Blues Band. Their self-titled debut album The Suntanama blows blues chords and structures arranged and spread around the hand-to-mouth singing style, in the rambling tradition of beard wearing country blues.

EXZOSKELETON - Exploring Biology

Chicago's no-wave death-jazz scene seems to be constantly expanding, breathing like some hellbent organism of its own. Weasel Walter stands at the center of the tornado, whether it's with the Flying Luttenbachers, To Live and Shave in LA 2, or his various associations with other acts like Bobby Conn, the now-departed Lake of Dracula, or HateWave. Exoskeleton is an all-out assault on the senses. Exploring Biology pits Walter on saxophone and clarinet, relinquishing the drums to the crazed, clattering Billy Sides. The quartet (with alto sax and synth) deconstruct free jazz in the usual energetic manner, reaching it's most interesting peaks when the fierce saxes dance with the fluttering synthesizer. The six untitled tracks rush by, even on the 20+ minute track 5, leaving the listener in a whirlwind, there is a genuine feeling of rebellion and a crazed spirit here.

Lee Perry - The Complete UK Upsetter Singles. Volume Two

The Complete UK Upsetter Singles series is a fantasic collection of all of the 7" singles that were relased on the Upsetter UK label between 1969 and 1973. "I am the kinkiest!" proclaims Scratch on "Kinky Mood". Kinky, indeed: the 50 tracks on Volume 2 are much more upsetting and experimental, this was when Scratch first started to live up to his Upsetter nickname: weird intros, spooky instrumentals, more than one rhythm spliced together into a single song. As with Volume One, strictly crucial.

Crawling Chaos - Homunculus Equinox (Foetus Products)1981

Crawling Chaos formed in 1979 on Tyneside & released their debut cult heavy modern 7'' Sex Machine on Factory records in 1980, which reached number 3 in the indie charts.Their debut long player The Gas Chair was released on Factory Benelux in early 1982, think Nurse With Wound locked in an airing cupboard with Joe Meek and Can. Recorded at the band's own studio, The Pits, and edited down from many hours of tape experiments. Factory somehow lost 15 minutes of material intended for the album, and so the same Pits sessions resulted in the Homunculus Equinox cassette being released on the bands own Foetus Productions label in late 1981. Don't expect any easy listening stuff or straight forward song structures here, more chaotic post-punk weirdness and experimental pop songs.

The Astronauts and Zounds *** Free gig**** April 22, 2010

Following the Proud Galleries fiasco last month (which resulted in Heat Magazine's favourite smack-addled indie ballbag Pete Doherty and his chums hijacking what should have been a wonderfully eclectic night), it's been decided to compensate those who paid above the odds to see The Astronauts and Zounds with a free gig at Brixton's The Grosvenor. Although the gig will be free collections will be taken- please donate what/if you can!
***TO THOSE WHO CAME TO THE PROUD GIG- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING ALONG AND SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT. UNFORTUNATELY WE ALL GOT SCREWED OVER BY THOSE GREEDY FUCKWITS. LET THIS BE A LESSON LEARNED; NEVER TRUST A MAN WHO NAMES A VENUE AFTER HIS SURNAME!***

Praise Space Electric - 2LeavingDemons

Bristol's Praise Space Electric evolved out of the chaotic and creative melting pot known as The Moonflowers, PSE and assorted entourage gleefully take a trip through the highlights and most intriguing parts of the last few decades. Influenced by genres as diverse as jazz, funk and spaced-out psychedelia, "2 Leaving Demons" is a sublime stoned groove that mixes early Funkadelic weirdness with distorted acid guitar freakouts, highly energetic jazz-funk fusions, haunting soul vocals, wild free form psychedelic improvisations, which fits perfectly the blissed out arrangements from an admittedly pretty accomplished group of rhythm 'n' groove obsessed hash heads. A guaranteed mind blower!

SUNS OF ARQA - Erasmus Meets the Earthling ep

Suns of Arqa creator and mentor Michael Wadada has been continuously investigating the supernatural potential hidden in the Classical Raga structure of the music of India. His mission – to mix the cerebral and illusive cosmological vibrations of Raga, with the mother earth rhythms of Niyabinghi drumming that were surfacing in England in the guise of Dub Reggae.

V/A - Does Time Affect Memory

Another killer compilation from French label Amanita, this time in the form of the sprawling double compact disc set Does Time Affect Memory, an expansive overview of avant rock and noise scene surrounding the Amanita/Trost/Trottel labels, which were (and still are, in the case of Amanita) spitting out some absolutely awesome underground experimental music, heavy post-rock/drone improv, tribal clatter weirdness, free jazz fueled post rock freakouts. 27 bands, 131 minutes...an afternoons worth of quality Euro avant rock listening. Most of this stuff is either exclusive to the compilation, or is totally out of print in their original form. Wrapped in a gatefold cardboard sleeve that folds out to 4 panels, with eyeburning Bolino-designed artwork.

Aphex Twin - Windowlicker EP

Another ground breaking ep from Aphex Twin showing us the originality of his tunes and yet again annihilates any competition trying to get close. It sounds quite like nothing else that will be with us a long time and won't age with us. I think the cover sort of defines it. Richard D James has invaded music, made it swallow a bomb and given the detonator to a monkey. Inspired.
