Cement - Cement

Formed in the early '90s after bandleader and lead vocalist Chuck Mosley had spent time fronting Faith No More (He joined the band between 1984 and 1985 replacing Courtney Love (Hole) as lead singer. He was featured on their debut album We Care a Lot and on their second, Introduce Yourself.) Bad Brains, and Haircuts That Kill, Cement managed two releases on the Dutch East India imprint. While pretty much ignored critically and commercially, Cement did create some rambunctious, funky garage rock inspired by irreverent artists as varied as Mosley's prior employers Ween and Frank Zappa. Cement made a distinct noise that wasn't without its moments, released in 1993, the band's self-titled debut is an organ driven funk-core free-for-all that signaled the group's musical abandon and fascination with the power and sensibility of protest music in its rawest form.

Adam Green - Adam Green

Adam Green is better known for his stint with the Moldy Peaches, Adam Green was his first solo album. It features the same blend of touching observations and bedroom lo-fi that dominated their debut and indeed much of the so called "anti-folk" scene. And if it seems highly reminiscent of his work with the anti-folk duo, it's mostly because he actually recorded the album before his sonic adventures with Kimya Dawson began in earnest. Adam focuses on strum-and-hum-along acoustic numbers with the odd splattering of saxophone ("My Shadow Tags On Behind") or suitably lo-fi computer effects that are more ZX Spectrum than Cubase ("Apples I'm Home", "Computer Show").

Asian Dub Foundation - Rafi's Revenge

ADF still deliver some of the freshest & sweetest confrontational music around RAFI'S REVENGE is by far one of the best records of the 90's, the kind of album that began to pop up with increasing frequency. Influenced by a wide variety of musical traditions, it transcends its pan-cultural roots to create a new paradigm, bowing to its roots but forging a new identity. Throughout this arresting effort, Asian Dub Foundation incorporate breakbeats, funky guitar and keyboard riffs, drum-and-bass, and reggae. The staccato, dance hall-style vocals skip and stutter across the frenetic rhythms and complex musical textures. This album is pure class.

V/A - Lunapark 0,10 (Avant-Garde Voices 1913-1974)

"Luna Park 010" features an incredible collection of word mangling heavyweights, Apollinaire, Mayakovski, Joyce, Artaud, Tzara, Duchamp, e.e. cummings, Gysin and others. words have never seemed so alien and other... and have never served so little purpose while seeming to mean so much without knowing quite why. This collection forms a panorama of the most important avant garde writers and artists of the twentieth century. All material is read by the artists themselves & spans the decades, from Apollinaire in 1912 to the Brazilian avant-garde of the seventies...

V/A - Melankolic Sampler

The Melankolic label by Massive Attack was launched in September 1996, as their own personal pet project, which was to start a label to discover and mature artistic talent which had a similar style and direction to their own material. Many of the artists that were signed to Melankolic would be familar to Massive Attack fans like, Horace Andy, Alpha and Craig Armstong. Massive Attack espoused a non-interference philosophy that allowed the artists to make their albums in the way they wanted. Although Melankolic was initially launched so Massive Attack could continue working relationships with artists who had contributed to their own music the label gradually started on signing musicians who work outside the mainstream but who they believe could be hugely commercial, given sufficient time and support. Artists like Sunna and Lewis Parker.

Generic - For A Free And Liberated South Africa 7"ep

Newcastle based Generic were formed after the split of early 80s anarcho band ''blood robots'' their debut ep 'For A Free And Liberated South Africa' was released on their own Flat Earth records in 1985. Generic went on to release a couple of split lps (the first with ELECTRO HIPPIES & the second with Mortal Terror) plus a handful of 7"s (the last one even featured some Chumbawamba members). Their sound was abrasive, angry, and sincere, with a bit of melody creeping in towards the end... bands members went on to form ''one by one, boxed in, pleasant valley children, ebola''
