If radical, poetic activism had a soundtrack, Michael Franti would be all over the sleeve notes. He and his band Spearhead are taking on the world, one cause at a time producing music that is based on the premise of 'getting the message to the people'. Musically Franti is near impossible to pigeon-hole, such is the wide variation of styles which Spearhead are capable of. When all the elements of this complex hybrid(Hiphop, reggae, jazz, old school soul and punk) are properly aligned, the results are body-shaking tunes, ugly realities and raw, earthy, feel-good music combined so skilfully that it makes you wonder why intelligent music such as this has had to take a back seat.1. Been listening to MF since The Beatnigs...a true talent and a smart man.
TOTALLY... i saw the beatnigs play w/ michel shocked in the late 80s... been hooked ever since.xx
Way back in my undergrad days, Kevin Carnes (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Kevin+Carnes?anv=Kevin) was in a band with some folks we knew from SF (Metro-sensuous- worst band name ever- but good stuff). He crashed in my dorm room...we ended up talking for a good chunk of the night about music and drumming. He was all excited about the idea of doing more primitive drumming with a more political bent. Wasn't too long after that that he put together The Beatnigs with Franti. iirc Adam from Consolidated was also in Metro-sensuous.
