here's to another year of the same old shit...

Prairie Dog Flesh - Take the Green Over the Red (3 LOBED)

The first release from this Bardo side project (featuring pretty much everyone in the band) So, it comes as no surprise that the collection of songs that make up Take the Green over the Red sound quite a bit like Bardo Pond.
"The Winged Dog" starts with a two note delayed guitar line, panning slowly across the speakers while Clint talks over the repetitious fuzz. Drums pulse only in the deep recesses of the mix. The distorted blues chord riff of "Vampire Squid" combined with the simple vocal line are probably the closest the Bardo's will get to sounding like they're a pop band from Olympia, Washington. The delicate last track, "Donovan Out," is played with a single acoustic guitar and accented by quiet bongos, both accompanying hushed vocals. The resulting album is an hour of the primal sonic love, PDF are more free form, less specific. Sit back and take a trip

V/A - Heavyweight Sound | 2 Heavyweight

Out of the many reggae reissue labels that plied their trade in the '90s, none did it with more care than Blood & Fire Records. Choosing to use the fertile '70s era as a launching pad, (with dub being a particular speciality), B&F reissued classic albums by such legends as The Congos, I Roy, King Tubby, and Scientist.
Here's the first and second installments of the Blood & Fire Heavyweight Samplers. You will not be disappointed, both collections are filled with the creme de la creme of heavy sounds from the "golden" age of reggae that you're ever going to find. They include massive dubs from I,Roy, The Congos, Prince Alla, Philip Frazier, Tappa Zukie, King Tubby, Burning Spear,Horace Andy, etc with many of the cuts exclusive to these compilations.

Powerful live improvising psychedelia recorded at Free Festivals and urban squats in the late '70s with wonderfully remastered sound. A fitting testament to Beautiful (or Floating) Anarchy, the ethos of the Festival Movement of which Here & Now were such a vital component.

Herman Düne- Mas Cambios

This is an anti-folk album that’s far too hard to get a handle on, there’s nothing concrete to grab, it’s all air. How about some facts? We can maybe build on something there. Herman Dune are two Jewish Swedish brothers (David-Ivar Herman Dune and Andre Herman Dune) who live in Paris, record in New York, and give it a slab of Americana like steak. The non-American factor is important: they’re non-Americans composing American culture, living in it as well. It’s non-American Americana, an outsider’s view, in a genre which seems to consist of just itself, Herman Dune are a revelation.

Mouse on Mars - Niun Niggung

Mouse on Mars dabble in complex, heavily hybridized forms that include everything from ambient, techno, and dub to rock, jazz, and jungle. Working from Werner's studio, the pair fused an admiration for the early experiments of Krautrock outfits like Can, Neu!, Kluster, and Kraftwerk into an offbeat update including influences from the burgeoning German techno and ambient scenes
It's all too easy to assume that bands wielding multiple laptops can suffer from too much book learnin'. Not so with Mouse on Mars. The German band's sixth full-length, Niun Niggung, is like a child's playroom with electronic toys run amuck. Percolating beats ascend to the surface only to pop like soap bubbles, while tacked-together melodies are as likely to disintegrate midsong as they are to wobble to the conclusion. Check out the frenetic clambering of steel drums and the fat warped `bouncing ball' snare of diskdusk. The ska-reggae influence is heavily evident on niun nugging and is used to good effect.

Alexander Sopchek - Masks

In the lineage of Sun Ra, Fela and other unclassifiable artists, a musician from Belgrade constructs his own sonic universe, rooted in the rhythms of Africa and branching out into future jazz. Masks was Sopchek's first album for Cosmic Sounds, released in 2000 and is entirely dedicated to Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania.
7 tracks, no pigeonholes, File under clever bastard beatnik shit, or something. Sopchek is throwing a virtual party in his studio just outside Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He has invited African pygmies, a witch doctor, half a Kenyan tribe, a jazz group with brass section and a set of pedigree drum loops. In other words this is a solo album cunningly assembled from scraps and samples by a producer who loves jazz and African music. Now my theory is that if you work in this way, your music will ultimately be banal, but Sopchek has so much flair and sheer, big hearted vibe that he comes within a hair's breadth of proving me wrong. The album is infectious. Perfect for your next loud party, especially if you're inviting clever bastard beatniks.
