Aisha Kandisha`s Jarring Effects, was formed in Marrakech in 1987 by Abdou El Shaheed, Habib El Malak and Pat Jabbar, to develop a Shabee crossover, influenced by diverse elements such as Gnawa, Reggae, Ragga, HipHop, Ambient, Trance, House, and experimental noises.
Under the direction of their Arabic-speaking Swiss leader and co-producer Patrick Jabbar El Shaheed, the seven members of AKJE recorded the initial sessions for SHABEESATION in 1991 and 1992 in Casablanca. A shabee (Popular Moroccan music) band at its core, the group's Indian and Arab melodies and rhythms were embellished in the initial mixing process with "found sounds" recorded to DAT by Jabbar El Shaheed.
These atmospheric snippets of life in Marrakech include the thud of a knife being slapped across the back of a neck (on "Dunya"), samples of Soussi Berber musicians (also on "Dunya"), and the blasts of a gunshot (on "Nbrik"). Throughout the album's nine tracks, electric guitars and synthesizers mix with traditional Moroccan instruments including the kmenja, a violin instrument played vertically, the guimbri, a West African bass-stringed instrument, and aouuda, a small wooden flute.

The band's already complex sound was further transformed at Bill Laswell's Brooklyn studio in 1993. As co-producer, he invited Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets to lend his booming vocals to "Fin Roh," while Laswell himself picked up his fabled bass for several tracks. P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell and rest of the groove-heavy Greenpoint Posse round out the funk. The already hypnotic fusion of Moroccan dance-pop and modern sampling technology were taken to a higher plane under Laswell's direction, and the resulting trance like melange is positively rapturous.

Great album this one. Was only playing it the other day, in fact I think ALL of Laswell's North african collabs are worth cheking out...a couple of things I am after if you or yr blog buddies have id Nick Kent's Subterraneans 'My Flamingo' single that came out on Demon and Toop's 'Ocean of Sound' 2/3&4. Got the first one but have never seen the others and the single I used to have but a long time ago on your side of the world. How is Bristol these days?
I used to be pally with Pop Group/ Rip Rig people tho' especially the late lamented Sean Oliver ( actually if you have that Smith And Mighty track they finished after he died that came out on a Bristol compilation, maybe called 'Friendly Fires'? Anyway will let you get back to the real world!

Yes Sean was a truly nice bloke and we bonded over lots of things tho we never agreed on the best jazz album (mine Ayler 'Spiritual Unity' his 'A Love Supreme'. When I heard about his death (Sean O'hagen had written a piece in the NME and I was out here in Australia by then I just sat down & cried.) His spirit no doubt lives on in his kid by Tessa from The Slits. I actually roadied for RRP a couple of times but I was a very fuct up bunny back then to say the least...used to have tapes of every show they did and still have quite a few Pop Group/MS shows which I will poss post sometime. There is a guy I know in Holland that has quite a few that I don't have but we are negotiating. I will send you some links to stuff that I have already uploaded sometime soon. As for Judy N yeah love that album too and Sean was actually on quite a lot of ON -U stuff back then Skysaw.org will keep you amused for hours on all things Sherwood!

PS I forgot to say I have actually seen Laswell live a couple of times Material actually played at Heaven in London 81 or 82 and then caught Last Exit in Amsterdam (which I still have a tape of somewhere...) Bill L resplendent in denim jacket with Motorhead logo on the back! Do you know the Sacred Dub site they have brilliant podcasts that feature a lot of Laswell stuff and are up to no 49 now, and all are worth D/L ing!
