Levellers 5 - Springtime [Probe Plus Records]

Levellers 5 were a five-piece post-punk band from Manchester, their debut album 'Springtime' was released on probe plus in 1990 to a rapturous reception… from John Peel and nobody else.
i first came across them in ABLAZE zine & probably heard a few tracks on john peel, i still think their debut lp is one of the most interesting post punk albums to be released at the tail end of the 80s/start of the 90s... stunning tracks like what's my name,be happy & next big thing still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up... the epic 16 minute version of the title track springtime just needs to be heard... and their cover of jonathon richmans' pablo picasso brings this seminal album to a close... it should have seen some success but it failed to and the band remained in total obscurity, releasing a few eps and their second lp 'clatter' before the success of the Levellers, eventually forced the band to change their name to Calvin Party.
The band recorded three Peel sessions, two in 1990 and a last one in 1992.

Awesome album is Springtime. Saw them live somewhere and the band gave us a single. Hairs on the back of your neck - I know what you mean. The follow-up, Clatter, sounded like it was made by a different (inferior) band.

You are not alone!

An excellent band,I saw them at the Free Gardeners WMC in Blackburn/Darwen. I think they were supported by a band called Walter Mitty`s Head and the worlds worst comedian, who went by the name of "Benji Ming"

During the comedians set the only thing that broke the audiances silence was a forthright heckler shouting "G'roff ya shite",but he didn't get off he carried on to the finale which was smashing plastic cups full of water on his head to handels water music.
